Waterford – Sept 7

We headed up to Waterford where we spent the morning searching for Sheilas ancestors in a small cemetery ! The first challenge was to find the entrance, google maps had us scaling a 20 foot stone wall!!! We finally found a gate and started the search. Pierre found the first one for Sheila’s dad’s cousin  Roley, Vera his wife and Margaret his mother. The grass was knee deep and really wet so it was tough going but Sheila found the second one for we think her Dads uncle Nicholas Noble. A very successful hunt. We then went to the last address we had for Roley and Vera and knocked on the door, on the off chance that it was still in the family. A very lovely young woman answered the door, but alas, she knew nothing of them and was of no relation.

We then stopped off at the Waterford crystal factory for a tour but discovered it was just a showroom with a tour but not an active factory. Lots of beautiful crystal glassware etc. to purchase. But really, who wants crystal these days??

Then a walk about the downtown, a stop at O’Sullivans pub for lunch, and a then a short tour of a Reginalds Viking tower (914 AD) on the harbour.

We booked an Airbnb down the coast, so set off with the help of google to find it. Most of the drive was on a motorway, but then we hit the typical country roads of Ireland. Barely one lane where if you meet an oncoming car someone has to pull off to get by. We missed a couple of turns and ended up going in circles to find the cottage in the country!
